FILL IT UP | Staying with the Fishes

Luke 5

I. Background

A. Jesus in Luke 4

  • In the previous chapter, Jesus is tempted and starts his ministry.
  • He reads from Isaiah 61 in the synagogue of His home town.
  • They tried to throw Him off a cliff

B. Simon | Peter Knew Him

  • He even showed up at Simons house and healed His mother in law...
Luke 5:1-11 - One day as Jesus was standing by the Lake of Gennesaret the people were crowding around him and listening to the word of God. 2 He saw at the water’s edge two boats, left there by the fishermen, who were washing their nets. 3 He got into one of the boats, the one belonging to Simon, and asked him to put out a little from shore. Then he sat down and taught the people from the boat. 4 When he had finished speaking, he said to Simon, “Put out into deep water, and let down the nets for a catch.” 5 Simon answered, “Master, we’ve worked hard all night and haven’t caught anything. But because you say so, I will let down the nets.” 6 When they had done so, they caught such a large number of fish that their nets began to break. 7 So they signaled their partners in the other boat to come and help them, and they came and filled both boats so full that they began to sink. 8 When Simon Peter saw this, he fell at Jesus’ knees and said, “Go away from me, Lord; I am a sinful man!” 9 For he and all his companions were astonished at the catch of fish they had taken, 10 and so were James and John, the sons of Zebedee, Simon’s partners. Then Jesus said to Simon, “Don’t be afraid; from now on you will fish for people.” 11 So they pulled their boats up on shore, left everything and followed him.

If you want God to fill up your life, there are 3 things you must come to grips with:

1st | Obedience

  • Because you say so. I saw what you did with my mother in law. Because you said it, I will.
  • Peter wasn’t expecting to be a part of what God was doing he was just obeying. Your greatest blessing will come when you are just being obedient and not expecting.

B. You never know what God has in store until you obey

  • When they did so, not when they prepared to, or prayed for, but when they did so.

C. From empty nets to sinking boats

  • Jesus said let’s go deeper and he obeyed and everything changed. What does it mean to really commit to going deeper?

His obedience led him to the greatest windfall of his life. Today you might be just one yes away from your miracle. We have to come to grips with obedience. Next, we got to come to grips with the King.

2nd | A King, not a thing

A. Peter lands the catch of a lifetime and what does he do?

When Simon Peter saw this, he fell at Jesus’ knees and said, “Go away from me, Lord; I am a sinful man!”
  • Peter recognized the King in Jesus... "I am not worthy."
  • We want a thing, not king.  We want what Jesus has for us, we just don’t want Him.
  • Who wants a King? There will be orders and you will be subject to those orders. You are there to serve a king.

B. I wish I had known then what I know now.

  • Maturity in life is learning what’s worth it and what’s worthless. I wish I had known early on what’s worth it.
  • I know now that the things of God are nothing without Him. I wish I had known then what I know now.

C. Peter leaves the fishes

Then Jesus said to Simon, “Don’t be afraid; from now on you will fish for people.” 11 So they pulled their boats up on shore, left everything and followed him.
  • They left everything and followed Him. "This is awesome!"
  • They Choose the King over the thing.

Jesus does exactly what you would expect a King to do. He gave them a mission. If you want God to fill up your life you have to come to grips with obedience, you have to want the King and not the thing and when you get there you get what you really need for true fulfillment a mission.

3rd | Mission

A. The only thing that will make you accept a King, instead of a thing, is mission.

  • Pursuing your purpose is worth it because God’s favor lasts a lifetime.
  • You’re not fulfilled because you have no mission. You need to drop the greatest windfall you ever had and follow Him.

B. What is it for

Luke 9:15-21 - Then he said, “Beware! Guard against every kind of greed. Life is not measured by how much you own.” 16 Then he told them a story: “A rich man had a fertile farm that produced fine crops. 17 He said to himself, ‘What should I do? I don’t have room for all my crops.’ 18 Then he said, ‘I know! I’ll tear down my barns and build bigger ones. Then I’ll have room enough to store all my wheat and other goods. 19 And I’ll sit back and say to myself, “My friend, you have enough stored away for years to come. Now take it easy! Eat, drink, and be merry!”’ 20 “But God said to him, ‘You fool! You will die this very night. Then who will get everything you worked for?’ 21 “Yes, a person is a fool to store up earthly wealth but not have a rich relationship with God.”
  • The man with all the new barns never asked why? Why am I rich?
  • Material things without the ability to enjoy them are not a blessing but a curse.
  • God doesn’t mind blessing you.  But what is the blessing for? You can have all the nets and boats but if you don’t fish in the right spot it doesn’t make any difference.
  • Peter is at a crisis point... Will he stay with the fishes or commit to the cause?
  • God wants to give you a cause. There is no greater cause than the cause of Jesus Christ. "I will make you a fisher of men."
  • If you have a cause your life has meaning, and when your life has meaning your assets have meaning--they have a new worth not based on the American dream, but the purposes of God.

C. Why are we here? To Hear from God

  • People gather to hear from God. Not to hear me preach but to hear from God.
  • Has God spoken to you? One word from God can change everything.
  • We believe this book can alter ideas and the way we see things and ultimately the way we live.
  • Peter left the fishes for the cause of Jesus

Today is He worth your obedience? You might be one yes away from the fulfillment you are looking for. Is your goal the King or the thing? If you are pursuing the King, you will take up His mission.
