Good & Evil

I. Why does evil exist in the world?

A. Three truths: We have to reconcile first.

1. God is Good

Psalm 100:5 - For the Lord is good. His unfailing love continues forever, and his faithfulness continues to each generation.

Genesis 1:31 - Then God looked over all he had made, and he saw that it was very good!

2. God is all powerful

Jeremiah 32:17 - O Sovereign Lord! You made the heavens and earth by your strong hand and powerful arm. Nothing is too hard for you!

  • God is not just powerful. He is all powerful.

3. The world is evil

John 3:19 - And the judgment is based on this fact: God’s light came into the world, but people loved the darkness more than the light, for their actions were evil.

  • We have all seen the evil in the world. We know evil exist because of experience.

3 Reasons Why Evil Exist in our World Today

1. God’s will: God’s will Allows Evil

  • He made a world where evil could exist Genesis 3

If God allowed evil, He can also banish it. One day He will, but not right now.

  • God allows evil to continue to exist

Psalm 81:11-12 - But no, my people wouldn’t listen. Israel did not want me around. So, I let them follow their own stubborn desires, living according to their own ideas.

  • God lets us make evil choices

  • God allows painful consequences

Leviticus 5:17 - Suppose you sin by violating one of the Lord’s commands. Even if you are unaware of what you have done, you are guilty and will be punished for your sin.

  • We can choose evil and its because the choices we make as humans that allows evil to continue

Isaiah 13:11 - I, the Lord, will punish the world for its evil and the wicked for their sin. I will crush the arrogance of the proud and humble the pride of the mighty.

  • At the same time he has compassion for all suffering

2 Corinthians 1:3-4 - All praise to God, the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ. God is our merciful Father and the source of all comfort. 4 He comforts us in all our troubles so that we can comfort others. When they are troubled, we will be able to give them the same comfort God has given us.

  • One day He will cease all suffering

2. Satan Afflicts Evil

  • Satan did not create evil. He cannot create anything, but he twists everything.

  • Weather; Satan used weather to kill jobs, family

  • Ambition; Sapphira and Ananias, their ambition for honor led to losing their lives

  • Sex; a wonderful gift from God but it can be twisted, remember king David

  • Our ability to talk, Peter tried to stop Jesus from going to the cross, get behind me Satan

3. We Accept Evil

  • Evil began with Adam and Eve

Genesis 2:17 - …except the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. If you eat its fruit, you are sure to die.”

  • Sin brings spiritual and physical death

  • They passed onto humanity the sin nature; that’s why we call it original sin.

Roman 5:12 - When Adam sinned, sin entered the world. Adam’s sin brought death, so death spread to everyone, for everyone sinned.

  • Evil is present in me

  • It is not just Adam and Eve’s fault

Romans 7:21 - I have discovered this principle of life—that when I want to do what is right, I inevitably do what is wrong.

  • We need Jesus, or we are left in our original state.

God allowed it, Satan uses it, and we accept it. The next question is: Why does God continue to allow it?

II. Why does God continue to allow it?

A.  He already defeated evil

1 Corinthians 15:57 - But thank God! He gives us victory over sin and death through our Lord Jesus Christ.

  • The victory has been won in Jesus.

Colossians 2:15 - In this way, he disarmed the spiritual rulers and authorities. He shamed them publicly by his victory over them on the cross.

  • He defeated evil at the cross and will allow us to join him in that victory for all eternity.

  • So why not end it now? To God it is ended.

  • He told Moses I am. God IS. We call that the everlasting now.

B. He is patient

  • When you see a situation that breaks your heart, how do you think God feels?

“…a God who cannot suffer is poorer than any man. For a God who is incapable of suffering is a being who cannot be involved. Suffering and injustice do not affect him. And because he is so completely insensitive, he cannot be affected or shaken by anything. He cannot weep, for he has no tears. But the one who cannot suffer cannot love either. So he is also a loveless being.” -Jürgen Moltmann

  • He doesn’t stop it because He has provided for the salvation of all

1 John 2:2 - He himself is the sacrifice that atones for our sins—and not only our sins but the sins of all the world.

  • He desires for us all to turn to Him

1 Timothy 2:3-4 - This is good and pleases God our Savior, who wants everyone to be saved and to understand the truth.

  • He waits patiently desiring all

2 Peter 3:9 - The Lord isn’t really being slow about his promise, as some people think. No, he is being patient for your sake. He does not want anyone to be destroyed but wants everyone to repent.

  • He knows what it will cost Him in pain and suffering but because He is love, for us He is patient.

Summary

The world is evil not because of God’s creation but because of mankind’s choice. God cares about those who suffer, and it is God’s proclaimed purpose to one day do away with evil. He waits so more might come to Him for salvation. In the end the only solution to the problem of evil is trust. When you trust God you can ask Him hard questions. When you trust Him, you begin to see things in the light of eternity.
