Luke 10:25-37 - One day an expert in religious law stood up to test Jesus by asking him this question: “Teacher, what should I do to inherit eternal life?” 26 Jesus replied, “What does the law of Moses say? How do you read it?” 27 The man answered, “‘You must love the Lord your God with all your heart, all your soul, all your strength, and all your mind.’ And, ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’” 28 “Right!” Jesus told him. “Do this and you will live!” 29 The man wanted to justify his actions, so he asked Jesus, “And who is my neighbor?” 30 Jesus replied with a story: “A Jewish man was traveling from Jerusalem down to Jericho, and he was attacked by bandits. They stripped him of his clothes, beat him up, and left him half dead beside the road. 31 “By chance a priest came along. But when he saw the man lying there, he crossed to the other side of the road and passed him by. 32 A Temple assistant walked over and looked at him lying there, but he also passed by on the other side. 33 “Then a despised Samaritan came along, and when he saw the man, he felt compassion for him. 34 Going over to him, the Samaritan soothed his wounds with olive oil and wine and bandaged them. Then he put the man on his own donkey and took him to an inn, where he took care of him. 35 The next day he handed the innkeeper two silver coins, telling him, ‘Take care of this man. If his bill runs higher than this, I’ll pay you the next time I’m here.’ 36 “Now which of these three would you say was a neighbor to the man who was attacked by bandits?” Jesus asked. 37 The man replied, “The one who showed him mercy.” Then Jesus said, “Yes, now go and do the same.”
I. The Priest
Luke 10:31 - “By chance a priest came along. But when he saw the man lying there, he crossed to the other side of the road and passed him by.
A. A priest is God’s representative
When you want to know about a person's God or religion you ask the priest.
B. You are God’s representative
1 Peter 2:9 - But you are not like that, for you are a chosen people. You are a royal priesthood, a holy nation, God’s very own possession. As a result, you can show others the goodness of God, for he called you out of the darkness into his wonderful light.
You are called to be priest / to represent God on this planet.
C. Engineered for greatness as a representative Of Jesus
We were chosen to be like Him and He has given us the glory of Christ.
We are to shine, reflect God’s glory, His compassion and His mercy!
2 Corinthians 5:17-21 - This means that anyone who belongs to Christ has become a new person.
- The old life is gone; a new life has begun!
- A new life. A life as an ambassador.
And all of this is a gift from God, who brought us back to himself through Christ. And God has given us this task of reconciling people to him. 19 For God was in Christ, reconciling the world to himself, no longer counting people’s sins against them. And he gave us this wonderful message of reconciliation.
- Given us the task of reconciling people to Him.
- If He is for us who can be against us. This task has been placed on us by Him and as long as you are leading people to new life all His authority and power are behind you.
20 So we are Christ’s ambassadors; God is making his appeal through us. We speak for Christ when we plead, “Come back to God!” 21 For God made Christ, who never sinned, to be the offering for our sin, so that we could be made right with God through Christ.
- We are making the appeal for peace.
- You and I are the facilitators of that peace. Peace between each individual and God.
- We can do that by sharing what Christ has done for you.
1 Peter 2:9 - But you are not like that, for you are a chosen people. You are a royal priesthood, a holy nation, God’s very own possession. As a result, you can show others the goodness of God, for he called you out of the darkness into his wonderful light. 10 “Once you had no identity as a people; now you are God’s people. Once you received no mercy; now you have received God’s mercy.”
- V10 That’s how we are priest and ambassadors--I am just like you and I found mercy, you can too.
1 Peter 2:9-11 - But you are not like that, for you are a chosen people. You are a royal priesthood, a holy nation, God’s very own possession. As a result, you can show others the goodness of God, for he called you out of the darkness into his wonderful light. 10 “Once you had no identity as a people; now you are God’s people. Once you received no mercy; now you have received God’s mercy.” 11 Dear friends, I warn you as “temporary residents and foreigners” to keep away from worldly desires that wage war against your very souls. 12 Be careful to live properly among your unbelieving neighbors. Then even if they accuse you of doing wrong, they will see your honorable behavior, and they will give honor to God when he judges the world.
A. This is what we hate about Priest
You say this, then you act like that.
If you want people to trust you must fight back against duplicity.
B. We need to fight back against duplicity
James 1:6 - But when you ask him, be sure that your faith is in God alone. Do not waver, for a person with divided loyalty is as unsettled as a wave of the sea that is blown and tossed by the wind. 7 Such people should not expect to receive anything from the Lord. 8 Their loyalty is divided between God and the world, and they are unstable in everything they do.
1. Give your loyalty to God.
- You are unstable, and people can’t trust that.
- Can't pick our pet sins to be offended by. That is silliness. All sin is sin even the ones you like.
- Being loyal to God means to take His stand. Stop being offended for God, He will be okay.
- Proclaim when you are wrong and when you fail. We call that confession.
2. Start cleaning it up.
- We all have to start somewhere.
- Where is God telling you that you are 2 different people.
3. Get into God’s word.
2 Timothy 3:16-17 - 16 All Scripture is inspired by God and is useful to teach us what is true and to make us realize what is wrong in our lives. It corrects us when we are wrong and teaches us to do what is right. 17 God uses it to prepare and equip his people to do every good work.
- God uses His word to prepare us to be His priest and ambassadors.
- We can’t ignore it.
Fighting the culture war / The Lord gave us the negative example of a priest who chose not to look...
- We need to be righteous priest
- We need to open our eyes and see what is going on around us
- We need to open our hearts on those situations that need a ambassador from God
- We need to open our lives, so people can see that we can be trusted
You are chosen as a priest--be a good one. Fight against that duplicity we all fight against. Give your loyalty to God so you will be prepared to be His ambassador. Remember all God’s power and authority back you up as He makes His appeal to those around you through you. Embrace it and let God surprise you with what He can do through you!
