The Secret to Happiness

Phase One: Praise & Worship

Phase two: Confession, Getting clean before God. The path to holiness.

I. Confession

Definition of Confession: To agree with God that you are wrong

  • To agree with God about a behavior or attitude in your life that is sin. Sin means to miss the mark. To not live up to Christ standard.

Romans 8:29 NLT - For God knew his people in advance, and he chose them to become like his Son, so that his Son would be the firstborn among many brothers and sisters.

  • It is during this time of prayer that God corrects and adjust your life. It is where sanctification occurs.

  • God begins to change the way you think and react to life.

Romans 12:1–2 NLT - 1 And so, dear brothers and sisters, I plead with you to give your bodies to God because of all he has done for you. Let them be a living and holy sacrifice—the kind he will find acceptable. This is truly the way to worship him. 2 Don’t copy the behavior and customs of this world, but let God transform you into a new person by changing the way you think. Then you will learn to know God’s will for you, which is good and pleasing and perfect.

Confession and repentance is a gift from God.

  • God has given them so we could be happy. The secret to being happy in life is using the gift of confession.

Acts 3:19–20 NLT - 19 Now repent of your sins and turn to God, so that your sins may be wiped away. 20 Then times of refreshment will come from the presence of the Lord, and he will again send you Jesus, your appointed Messiah.

  • This is the primary way we tap into God’s forgiveness and maintain a Spirit filled life. When he saved you he Saved your past present and future.

Ephesians 1:7 NLT - He is so rich in kindness and grace that he purchased our freedom with the blood of his Son and forgave our sins.

  • You cannot pray powerful prayers without daily confession and repentance

Psalm 66:18 NLT - If I had not confessed the sin in my heart, the Lord would not have listened.

  • Confession is how you put on the righteousness of Christ. Crucify your old self and change a dry lack luster prayer life into powerful intercession

James 5:16 NLT - Confess your sins to each other and pray for each other so that you may be healed. The earnest prayer of a righteous person has great power and produces wonderful results.

II. Les miserables life

Un-confessed sin.

  • Is like the Canadian moose and ticks

  • Every un-confessed sin robs you of life.

So many Christians are miserable in their faith.

  • He knew the cost when he extended His hand to you. He paid the price for all of you from beginning to end on the cross.

1 John 2:2 NLT - He himself is the sacrifice that atones for our sins—and not only our sins but the sins of all the world.

The secret to happiness

  • Confession is the way we can learn to be happy.

1 Corinthians 6:20 ESV - for you were bought with a price. So glorify God in your body.

III. Getting clean

Lies we believe

  • The lie we fight is the first lie that God is holding out on us.

  • It is why we start with praise and worship. God is Good, God is great, He has proven His love for me.

God has to search us

  • We need God to search us because we have believed a lie for truth

Psalm 139:23–24 NLT - 23 Search me, O God, and know my heart; test me and know my anxious thoughts. 24 Point out anything in me that offends you, and lead me along the path of everlasting life.

  • Habits are really about emotional dependency

  • Never give up giving up until you have given it up

Holy Spirit filled

  • We cannot be filled with the Holy Spirit if there is anything else in us.

IV. 5 categories of potential sin

1. Sins of Thoughts and Attitudes

2 Corinthians 10:5 NLT - We destroy every proud obstacle that keeps people from knowing God. We capture their rebellious thoughts and teach them to obey Christ.

2. Sins of Speech

Matthew 12:36 NLT - And I tell you this, you must give an account on judgment day for every idle word you speak.

Ephesians 4:29 NLT - Don’t use foul or abusive language. Let everything you say be good and helpful, so that your words will be an encouragement to those who hear them.

3. Relationship Sins

Matthew 5:23–24 NLT - So if you are presenting a sacrifice at the altar in the Temple and you suddenly remember that someone has something against you, 24 leave your sacrifice there at the altar.

  • Do you neglect regular fellowship and meaningful service through your church?

Hebrews 10:25 NLT - And let us not neglect our meeting together, as some people do, but encourage one another, especially now that the day of his return is drawing near.

  • Husbands

1 Peter 3:7 NLT - In the same way, you husbands must give honor to your wives. Treat your wife with understanding as you live together. She may be weaker than you are, but she is your equal partner in God’s gift of new life. Treat her as you should so your prayers will not be hindered.

  • Wives

Ephesians 5:33 NLT - So again I say, each man must love his wife as he loves himself, and the wife must respect her husband.

  • Parents

Matthew 18:6 NLT - But if you cause one of these little ones who trusts in me to fall into sin, it would be better for you to have a large millstone tied around your neck and be drowned in the depths of the sea.

  • Children and youth

Ephesians 6:1–3 NLT - Children, obey your parents because you belong to the Lord, for this is the right thing to do. 2 “Honor your father and mother.” This is the first commandment with a promise: 3 If you honor your father and mother, “things will go well for you, and you will have a long life on the earth.”

4. Sins of Commission and Transgression

1 John 1:9 NLT - But if we confess our sins to him, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all wickedness.

5. Sins of Omission

James 4:17 NLT - Remember, it is sin to know what you ought to do and then not do it.

I know what you are thinking. If I have to go through all that everyday I don’t have a chance. Here is what I suggest. Ask the Lord to search you and find any wicked way in you. Then take a moment and let Him speak. If you feel something is wrong and your prayer life is ineffective go through the list of each category one at a time and give God time to speak to your heart. The difference between powerful prayer and happiness is the act of confession.

Father, open my eyes to my sin that I may be fully conformed to the image of Christ (Ro 8:29). Lord, correct me that I may walk in the full freedom of Christ (Jn 8:34; Ro 6:6,14). Wash me O God, that I may be clean and pure. Refine my heart in the beauty of holiness (Ps 51:7; Prov 17:3).

How often have I traded my greatest treasure for the worst filth? How regularly have I surrendered my highest joy for the most base indulgence? How quickly have I been to squander your gift of grace in exchange for the worthless trinkets of this short-lived world? I confess that my desires are not your desires, but beg you to change them. I confess that my hope is for my own glory, but ask you to set my hope on yours. I confess that my need for you is monumental, but my dependence upon you is minuscule. Hear my prayer good Lord. In your grace, come to my aid.
